Well, the apocalypse may be upon us, but that just makes for a great learning experience in the Stock Simulator! I assume this simulator will be up and running at least until the satellites fall, but more than likely before that the world will get back to normal.
In the meantime, a reminder that you can Short Sell stocks that you think will decrease, and let me tell you - everything is decreasing pretty much. I suggest looking into travel companies, cruise lines, and other luxury items that people will pass on during tough times, causing stock prices to fall dramatically. Once things return to 'normal' or whatever that is, there will be a higher-than-normal demand for such products due to peoples' abstaining from them for a period of time. If this crisis continues on for longer than a couple weeks, you could see stock prices come down VERY low and then shoot up even higher than before if normalcy comes back to us. Or you could lose all your money because a company goes out of business.
The stock market is always risk and there is no way to guarantee what the future will hold! So trade away.
To access short selling, click on "Advanced Mode: CFDs/STOPs" in the trading window on the right. Then, a button with "CFD: Sell (short trade)" will appear. Click on that and short sell your stocks!
Remember, however, that there is no limit to the money you can lose by short selling because the stock can more than double in price. So, be careful to only short sell stocks you expect will decrease in the near future - which could be all of them! Short selling a stock that goes out of business is like free money because you sell the stock first (getting you cash) and only have to buy it back later. If the company goes under and the stock is $0.00, then there is nothing to buy back! Cha-ching.
In all seriousness, stay healthy and isolated in these troubling times. If you have any questions about the simulator, e-mail me at jan.stdenis@granderie.ca - I'll be checking regularly. The $50 gift certificate prize is still on for the simulator, even if we find ourselves living in a post-COVID world without currency. A promise is a promise. The best to you and your families,
-Mr St Denis
